Psalm 66:5 Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men.**
Come and see — this is the lifestyle you have called me to. To come and see You, and in so doing call others to do the same.
Because when I look I get lost. When I stop, and stare, and absorb, Your works overwhelm me. You overwhelm me.
I praise You for a Red Sea parted and a voice out of a burning bush. I praise You for a wilderness that was not lost and promises still being fulfilled. I praise You for a people deserving to be discarded whom You hemmed in. I praise You for mercy that spills down from generation to generation and is still that from which I drink today.
I praise You for a woman You used to hide and rescue, and for another who would faithfully follow a seemingly dead-end path to glean in the fields for scraps of food and find a love that would carry Your seed. I praise You for prophecies whispered to the least-likely that saw their fulfillment hundreds of years later. I praise You for the waiting for those words spoken, written — time and time again — and not yet birthed.
I praise You for that night when the shepherds found their field to hold a weight of glory which the world did not yet know. I praise You for humility birthed in, and through, humanity as a promise that our worst weakness would still see a Son.
All along, Jesus, You have been calling for a witness. Inviting, alluring those bound in their flesh to become something so other — so You — simply by watching.
Come and see.
I praise You that my eyes have seen hundreds of years of glory stories and yet there is still more to come. Today. I praise You, oh God of the rock-made-water-by-one-tap that now lives deep within me. Water, welling up then and babbling far below my surface, that is forever leaning towards hardness but has the opportunity for soft and supple, speaks of fresh life … when I come and see.
I adore You, God of my eyesight. God who is winning back my eyesight. You have made me to behold and now You give me Your Word that tells me what and how to behold. And when I do — when I look deep into Your awesome — I do not leave the same.
**So what do I do with these posts, you ask, other than just read them? First, if you haven’t yet, read: Why I Adore to give you a context for this little space on my blog. (This post also gives context.)
If you are compelled, I invite you to participate. Set up a space and time in your own life to begin adoring. Over laundry or dinner dishes, on your commute to work, or in the wee morning hours — five or ten minutes is a great start. You can use the verse I list here every day or two as a launch pad for your own adoration.
Then practice praise.
Add to my adoration here, by posting a comment with your own words back to God about God …or hide it in your heart. Or wait until a Monday and link up to my adoration posts (beginning October 17th) with your own adoration.
I promise your weary soul won’t regret it.
